Upcoming Meetings for Agileists

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: , , , — Kris @ 10:06 am

We had a small, but very fun, knowledgeable and interesting group for the kickoff of the Enterprise Application Integration Alliance! We had some great discussions on the issues of integrating and improving legacy applications, scaling message busses, successes and failures in data architecture, and inheriting messaging systems that are being used in ways that were never intended.

We’re working on our next meeting, so stay tuned.

In the mean time…

Make sure you check out these other two meetings that I’ll be at, and I thought might be interesting to you as well!

Summary:
This will be a recurring meetup series, oriented towards large organizations and growing organizations. Everyone is welcome.

These meetups will follow the OpenSpace/ Unconference format – meaning, come prepared to participate! There will be no presentations nor handing-down of platitudes! Participants will share their experiences, challenges and successes. Everyone’s input is valuable; Everyone has something to learn and something to teach.

Topics will rotate and be chosen by the participants, to discuss issues such as:

* How can a growing organization stay agile, yet implement the discipline necessary to scale and survive?
* Innovation and agility of a startup, within a large enterprise
* How much process?
* Making cultural changes
* Moving the needle when you’re in the trenches
* Getting support from employees when you’re making changes from the top
* Knowing what needles to move and knowing when you’ve made a difference

This month, we will attempt to focus on practicing agile development methodologies in a large organization. What methods do not scale and how do you adjust?

Macromedia Founder Creating “Digital City” in Ohio

Digital City Layout

The Digital City Project - Columbus, OH

Marc Canter, a founder of Macromedia and now CEO/Chairman and Founder of Broadband Mechanics, gave a very interesting presentation/pitch yesterday at the TechLife Columbus Meetup at the Chocolate Cafe near OSU.

If you don’t know Marc, he was with the MacroMind/Macromedia back when they had first developed and released Flash (or maybe it was the predecessor to Flash, I’m not 100% sure).  Multimedia is a huge interest of Marc’s, and more recently, he’s been teaching a course at Case Western Reserve University on this concept of a “Digital City”.

The presentation was a little scattered, but here’s what his vision as how I understand it:

Using a special interest of “Workforce Development”, his company, Broadband Mechanics, is developing and deploying an open source social network software platform called “People Aggregator”.  This software allows blogging, social networking, live video chat, and all the other usual social-media stuff.  It is developed to OpenSocial specifications, so that it can be integrated with other open social media platforms (Facebook, Google, etc.).  Now, at this point in the presentation, I was starting to think “so what?”

But here’s what is very interesting about this, and what makes this is unique business.  Marc realized that there are a few needs that are unfulfilled in the market today:
